You can help protect monarchs by sharing your observations. Whether you’re in the city or the countryside, look for milkweed—the plants these butterflies rely on—and take part in Mission Monarch. By following these steps, you’ll help scientists better protect this threatened species.

Find milkweed plants.

It’s easy—they grow in many open areas, including parks, gardens, fields and alleyways. Several species can be found in Canada.

 Find some milkweed.
3 •

Check for monarchs.

Carefully examine milkweed plants for monarch caterpillars. They may be found on or under the leaves, in the flowers or on the pods. Be sure to check everywhere!

The egg - Under a leaf, which is oval or conical in shape, and ridged. - 1 mm

The caterpillar - Striped, with black filaments at the tips. - 2 to 45 mm

The chrysalis - The golden dots reflect the light - 30 mm

The adult - 90 to 100 mm

Record ALL your observations in your Mission Monarch account. 

Even if you don’t find any monarch life stages, enter a “0.” This data is just as important for scientists.
