I am trying to produce enough vegetables and fruit for our families' consumption, the raspberries, rhubarb and Italian plums, were plentiful, and without chemical spray.Although there is brown rot on the branches.
I would like to have as much success with the vegetables.
I planted beets in a separate container, they are growing well, I am having trouble in the ground with aphids on the squash flowers, they suck the life out of the yellow flowers. I found a few lady bugs and introduced them into the squash patch, but to no avail.
The flowers also show signs of something that has removed the whole flower, such as a skunk, at night.
I have placed a high frequency beam mechanism to deter the cats, hoping it will work on the other animals.
We also have morning glories that are beautiful and attract, honey bees.
Now retired, I plan to be self sufficient, leaving some plants for the insects, battling the stray cats, skunks, and other intruders to our space. I just need tips on how to be humane and grow vegetables.
I use compost, and am trying companion planting, the tomatoes are planted with marigolds, the cucumbers are planted with radishes, and did not grow well. This year I have tried to plant by the phases of the moon, not sure if it is working.
Thank you for this opportunity to explain my feelings about something so important to me.
I hope the next year will produce better results, with the expertise and advice from the program you offer.

Best regards,

Sandra Poirier
